Graham sits on different ground from our own yard, and it changes the job. Forty-five minutes west of Graford you leave the caliche over limestone behind and come onto the Western Cross Timbers proper: deep, slightly acid loam over sandstone and shale, on broken country that runs a thousand to thirteen hundred feet.
The soil is the first thing that changes
Palo Pinto County hands you caliche two feet down and a pH that fights you. Young County hands you the opposite problem — a loam that is mildly acid, with clay lower down that holds water long after the surface has dried. It drains well until it does not, and the depth at which that changes is the number worth knowing before anything is planted.
It means the lime that a Palo Pinto bed usually wants is often the wrong call here, and it means a plant list that thrives twenty minutes east can sulk on the west side of the county line. We soil test on Graham properties rather than assume, because we have been wrong about it by guessing.
Twenty-eight inches, and most of it in two months
Young County averages about twenty-eight inches of rain a year — a couple of inches down on the eastern end of our territory, and enough of a difference that it shows up in what establishes and what does not. The rain also does not arrive evenly. Grading and drainage get solved for the May storm, not for the annual figure.
Oil country leaves you something to build on
Graham has been drilled since the 1920s, and it shows on the ground. A good share of the acreage we walk around here already carries a caliche pad, a lease road or an old tank battery footprint. That is not a nuisance — it is base material already compacted and already draining, and on more than one job it has decided where the drive goes and saved the owner the cost of building one from nothing. The first thing we look for on a Young County property is what the oil companies left behind.
Post oak, live oak, and not cutting grade around either
The canopy here is live oak and post oak with juniper and mesquite filling in. Post oak in particular does not forgive root disturbance or a change in grade, and it will die two or three years after the work that killed it — long enough that nobody connects the two. On a Graham property the design goes around the oaks. Every tree in the photographs below was standing before we started.

A full build south of town: a metal headquarters building, an artificial turf lawn cut to a curve against broom-finish concrete, a boulder water feature with a cut stone slab bench, decomposed granite through the whole yard, and boulder-edged planting islands run around an existing live oak motte rather than through it.
The entrance is the part people notice last and use first — a gravel drive graded to shed water, run to a black pipe gate between cedar fence lines. It is the photograph at the top of this page.
What we bring up here
Everything. Trees and xeriscape stock off our own rows at the Graford nursery, forty-five minutes east, which is close enough that a large specimen arrives the same morning it is dug. Bulk stone, boulders and decomposed granite on the same trucks.
Graham, Loving, Olney and the Lake Graham and Lake Eddleman shoreline are all a comfortable day for a crew and a loaded trailer, which is the real limit on where we work.
